Smokefree Initiatives

In 2008 the regulation of Law 28705 took place, which includes smokefree provisions (public places, hospitals of all kinds and at all schools, including universities). The law regulates that entertainment areas must be physically separated and smoke extractors must used, it also states that the smoking areas must be no greater than 20% of the total area.

In February 2009 two parliamentary initiatives were introduced to Congress, both seeking to amend the Law,to ensure all public places are smokefree.

COLAT-PERU has a US$4500 dollars grant, funded by The American Cancer Society, that will be used during the first three months of the initiative which is estimated to take at least one year.

Needs related to implementing smokefree policies

Much support is needed for these legislative changes, which are promoted by a wide network of civil society organizations.
