Smokefree legislation/initiatives

Comprehensive smokefree legislation has been drafted but has never received enough votes to pass through Parliament. It was read in Parliament in February 2008 and was due to be read again in February 2009.

Restaurant owners are afraid of what they believe a ban would do to their profits. Critics say that the effect of no-smoking rooms is dubious and limits entrepreneurial freedom. Several toned-down versions of the law have been considered, including the chance for the owner to designate his business as a “smoker’s restaurant.” It also allows business owners to construct a separate smoking room to meet the requirement.
