Help available if you want to quit smoking
THE CARNOUSTIE Quit Smoking Group has been running for over 10 years, and in that time has helped many people to successfully give up smoking for life.
In 2009 the success rate for those stopped at three months after attending the group is 55 per cent, and 25 per cent of those are still stopped at one year from their quit date. This compares favourably with the national average of 21 per cent still stopped at one year.
The group can offer you the opportunity to stop smoking with help from highly experienced ‘Stop Smoking Specialists’ in a friendly, relaxed environment with no pressure or judgement to give you the best chance of giving up cigarettes for life.
It has been proven that if you have the motivation to stop, group support and stop smoking medication gives you a four times better chance of giving up smoking than going it alone.
Carnoustie patients can benefit from getting advice, information, peer support and prescribed stop-smoking medication at the group sessions. This all-in-house service proves to be more convenient for our patients and has been appreciated by those who have attended the group.
From January the group sessions will change from the 10-week course to a continuous rolling programme, which means people can join the group at any time and get support for as long as they require it.
It is hoped that this will give smokers an increased incentive to give up smoking, knowing the support will be ongoing without a cut-off point when they may still be requiring professional help and the support of their peers.
The rolling programme Quit Smoking group starts on Wednesday, January 13, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the waiting room at Parkview Primary Care Centre, Barry Road Carnoustie.
The group is open to all Carnoustie Medical Group patients. People from across Angus who cannot attend their local Quit Smoking groups can also come along, but will be referred to their own GP for prescribed stop smoking medication if required.
So if you smoke and want to give up, you now know what to do about it!
