How to Quit Smoking and Quit Forever

No matter how long you have been smoking for you know it is no good for your health or the health of everyone around you. You also know you should quit but you have never been able to break the addictive habit that draws you to light up another cigarette even after you have sworn that you would never do so again.

There have been several studies that have shown that the following methods have been proven to better your chances of breaking the habit, if they are all used together.

PREPARING TO QUIT SMOKING

The first step on your journey to quit smoking is preparing to quit smoking. To do this you must set a date that you plan on starting. Some people choose a special day, like a birthday or anniversary. Others simply pick a day to call it quits.

You must change your surroundings and eliminate all items that have any association with your smoking habit. That includes throwing out all cigarettes, lighters, ashtrays and any other smoking paraphernalia. You also want to stop people from smoking in your house or car,

Take a long hard look at what you have done in the past to quit smoking. What was successful in your attempt and what caused you to fail in your attempt?

LOOK TO OTHERS FOR SUPPORT

Once you start the process you will want to let everyone know that you have quit smoking. You also need to let them know that you will be looking to them for support and encouragement. If your friends are smokers, ask that that they do not smoke in front of you. You can also reach out to your doctors and discuss with them that you are quitting the habit of smoking.

Look to get some form of counseling to assist you in the process. You can engage in group counseling, individual or even counseling over the phone. Studies have shown that the more counseling you get the better your chances of success will be. Call your local hospital or local health center to see what is available in your area.

CHANGE YOUR ROUTINES AND HABITS ALL AROUND

You will need to keep your self extremely busy during the process. The urge to smoke will be strong and you will need to do something to occupy your time to fill the void of smoking. Distract your self by working out, going for a bike ride, painting, reading a magazine, anything to keep your mind away from smoking.

Changing routines will help you as well. Just changing around some small things that you do during the day can be a big help in breaking the urge to smoke. For example change your beverage of choice for lunch or try a different route to work in the morning.

Make sure that you keep your stress level low; this will keep the urge to smoke at a lower level. Some stress busters are stepping up your workout routine, relaxing and taking a nice walk.

CONSULT A PHYSICIAN ABOUT MEDICATIONS

Consult your doctor about available drugs on the market to help you quit smoking. There are many prescription drugs that will greatly increase your odds of quitting the habit for good. These days there are pills, patches, gums, inhalers and sprays that help you break the habit with medication.

UNDERSTAND AND BE PREPARED FOR HARD TIMES

During the process you will encounter many difficulties that will put road blocks in your way. You must be prepared for them and know that they will come. You must stay strong in your efforts to quit smoking. Stay away from drinking alcohol and other smokers as much as possible.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Many smokers attempt to quit many times and fail before they are finally able to break the habit. Even after you quit you will still be at risk of a relapse if you stray away from what is working for you.

Do not become discouraged if you begin to see some weight gain, as a matter of fact expect it. If you step up your exercise routine and eat better this negative side effect will be limited.

Be aware that your mood might change or you can experience symptoms of depression as well. Others in your support group can help you get thru this negative side effect by giving you some more positive feedback and encouragement along the way. If these side effects persist make sure you see a doctor as soon as possible.
