Is A Tax Hike Reason Enough To Quit Smoking?
Florida Smokers saw their pack of cigarettes go up a buck yesterday 7-1 but is it enough to make people quit?
The American Lung Association says only 7 percent of smokers can quit on their own.
And they say it usually takes six to nine attempts to quit successfully.
Many physicians say while the increased cost may deter some smokers, it will most likely take some other attempt on an individual level.
“There’s a lot of different ways of quitting and people need to figure what works for them. For some people it’s the nicotine issue, they need a nicotine patch or nicotine gum. For others, it’s just the psychological aspect, the habit of having something in their hands,” says Dr. Daniel Van Durme, a physician and professor at FSU.
Close to 18 percent of adults in Florida are smokers.
