Quit smoking to prevent swine flu
The Department of Health will launch a smoking-cessation roving exhibition from May 27 to urge people to quit smoking as one of the best preventive measures against human swine influenza.
The department said research shows smokers face a higher risk of flu infections and flu mortality than nonsmokers, so smoking cessation is essential in preventing flu, alongside maintaining a healthy lifestyle and good personal hygiene.
The exhibition will let people learn more about the perils of smoking and secondhand smoke, and ways to quit smoking, including tips, available channels and the latest treatments.
It will be held at Cityplaza in Island East from May 27 to 30; Whampoa in Hung Hom from June 4 to 7; Kingswood Ginza in Tin Shui Wai from June 18 to 21; Olympian City in Tai Kwok Tsui from July 30 to August 2; and Citygate in Tung Chung from August 13 to 16.
The Tobacco Control Office launched an Interactive Online Cessation Centre in February to provide a virtual platform for smokers to quit smoking. Eighty-three smokers had registered by the end of April.
