Quit smoking with program at Magruder

Magruder Hospital is now offering tobacco cessation services for adults in the community. Magruder has a Registered Nurse and a Certified Respiratory Therapist trained as Tobacco Treatment Specialists through the University of Massachusetts program, as well as a Registered Respiratory Therapist trained in the “Freedom from Smoking” program through the American Lung Association.
Both programs are six to eight weeks long, meeting usually once a week for one to two hours each session and the cost is $75 per person. There is some slight flexibility as to the times and locations for the groups, depending on instructor availability and group need.
Both programs work a great deal on preparation for quitting tobacco; how to cope with stress and other triggers, discussion of nicotine replacement therapy, reviewing recovery symptoms, developing long term strategies, managing weight and social situations as well as how to handle possible relapse. A small group setting is ideal because it allows for personalization and can also draw on the experiences of peers.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that “there is no clinical treatment available today that can reduce illness, prevent death and increase quality of life more than effective tobacco treatment interventions.” Interested individuals in the cessation program at Magruder are asked to call Mark Forney, RRT and Director of the Respiratory Therapy Department, at 419-734-3131, ext. 3461.
