New research suggests that teens are more likely to quit smoking if they receive telephone counseling to build their motivation and cognitive behavior skills.

Valley smoking drops sharply
In the past 10 years, the smoking rate in the Bear River Health District has dropped considerably.
The Bear River Health Department reports that, since 1999, the smoking rate has decreased by 39 percent in the district. Also, smoking among pregnant women has fallen by 14 percent in that period.

Physicians equipped to help smokers quit
STRATFORD — The Medical Society of P.E.I. has distributed updated smokers’ helpline resources, including “Health Benefits of Quitting Smoking” posters.
The distinctively orange-coloured posters are now displayed in doctors’ offices and very soon will appear in all Island hospitals.
